Summary
The children in two neighbouring villages in the interior of France have been in constant war since time immemorial. Every year, the schoolchildren of Longeverne, led by Lebrac, declare war on those in Velrans. In one battle, Lebrac has a brilliant idea: to rip off their prisoners' buttons and confiscate belts and braces so that they return home in humiliation. From then on, the side that seizes the most buttons wins the war.
