Playmodes
Spain
Founded in 2006 by Santi Vilanova and Eloi Maduell, Playmodes develops a practice that moves freely between art, music, design, science, and philosophy, combining conceptual and technological research with a deeply rooted DIY culture.
Each Playmodes project takes its own form and scale. It can take the shape of a kinetic sculpture, a piece of contemporary music, a spatial installation, a landscape intervention, or a stage design for the performing arts. Rather than defining themselves through any specific medium, their works share an ongoing exploration of visual music, spatial perception, light, sound, and time.
Algorithms coexist with handmade mechanisms; code with optics, electronics, and fabrication. Digital processes are not treated as ends in themselves, but as tools within a broader craft capable of giving physical form to ideas that, from multiple perspectives, contribute to a sensibility built around formal abstraction, audiovisual synchrony, and generativity.
Over the past two decades, Playmodes’ work has been presented internationally, from Shanghai to New York, from Sydney to Amsterdam, and from Barcelona to Medellín. Their projects have received international recognition in the fields of art and design, and their work is held in institutional and private collections around the world.
