The Audiovisual Sector Reflects on the Challenges and Opportunities of Children's Content in Spain
The children's and family audience is consolidated as one of the great challenges, and also one of the biggest opportunities, within the Spanish audiovisual landscape. Under this premise, the conference “Challenges and Opportunities of Children’s Audiovisual Content in Spain” is born. This meeting seeks to highlight the value of creating quality content for new generations and to open a space for dialogue among professionals, institutions, and young creators.
Organised as a complementary activity to the VIVABOOK Lab writing laboratory, the event will take place on Friday, November 21st at the Puerta de Toledo Campus of Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M). With a close and participatory format, the conference proposes a collective reflection on how to strengthen the audiovisual industry aimed at children, a segment historically underrepresented in national production despite its educational, cultural, and commercial potential.
A Cross-Sectional View of the Children’s Audience
The opening session, “The Children’s and Family Audience: A Window of Opportunity,” will feature the participation of prominent sector professionals: Yago Fandiño (RTVE – Clan), Álvaro Postigo (FECE), Verónica Buide (Production Consultant), Nuria González Blanco (Screenwriter and Director), and Estíbaliz Burgaleta (Screenwriter and ECAM Screenwriting Master's tutor). The panel, moderated by Tamara Moya (UC3M), will address topics such as the evolution of children's audiovisual consumption, the need for narrative diversity, the emergence of digital platforms, and the role of family cinema in theatres.
Following a coffee break, the conference will continue with the masterclass “Writing for Childhood,” given by Nuria G. Blanco, renowned screenwriter and animation director nominated for the BAFTA New Talent awards. In this session, Blanco will share key insights into the construction of stories that are sensitive, inclusive, and emotionally close to the child's perspective.
Beyond its training dimension, the meeting seeks to promote collaboration between universities, television broadcasters, production companies, and platforms with the aim of fostering a sustainable ecosystem of children’s content.
In the words of the organisers, “the conference aims to lay the foundations for Spain to commit decisively to children's audiovisual content as an engine for creativity, education, and cultural diversity.”
