Five voices, five universes: VIVABOOK Lab announces the projects selected for its first edition.
Stories that begin in the pages of a book and find their way to the screen. This is the premise behind VIVABOOK Lab , the first laboratory in Spain dedicated to the audiovisual adaptation of literary works for children. The five projects that will be part of its first edition have now been announced, a selection that reflects the creative wealth and diversity of approaches currently underway in contemporary children's fiction.
From reinterpretations of Catalan folk mythology to adventures with modern-day witches, the lab, promoted by My First Film Festival, will serve as a platform for experienced screenwriters to consolidate their proposals alongside industry experts.
These are the selected projects:
MITES
Inspired by Lo Rondallaire by Francesc de Sales Maspons i Labrós, MITES is an animated series project that updates Catalan folk legends with humor and fantasy.
Its creator, Silvia Espín , is a screenwriter specializing in genres such as horror and fantasy for teen and millennial audiences , recognized for works such as Huellas and No hi ha R3S . With experience in international platforms and festivals, Espín brings a different perspective to traditional imagery.
LA BRUIXA RING RING
Based on the book of the same name by Alicia Teba , this feature film tells the adventures of Lily, a young witch tasked with protecting the forest. Teba, an author and illustrator published in nine countries, co-wrote the project with filmmaker David Casademunt , responsible for the Netflix film El Páramo , which premiered in the Official Section of the Sitges International Film Festival. Together, they present a truly magical story.
DE PIEDRA In this world, emotions aren't just felt... they're also transformed into absurd and fantastical realities. This is the story of De piedra , an animated series based on the book of the same name by Laura Calavia . A screenwriter and director with a solid track record in independent cinema, Calavia has been recognized at festivals in Spain and Latin America. This story, starring two sisters, offers an emotional exploration filled with surreal humor and sensitivity.
SERP BLAVA, SERP VERMELLA
A walk among cacti and contradictions. This stop-motion philosophical comedy is based on Olivier Tallec's illustrated book and will be adapted into a short film by Ignasi Tarruella , award-winning director of short films such as Un crimen ejemplar and Swing , and Teresa Alférez , an anthropologist and educator who has promoted creative projects in prisons. Together, they champion humor as a vehicle for empathy, difference, and complicity.
EL CLUB DE LAS MALAS IDEAS
On his first day at his new school, Max meets a group that lives up to its name: The Bad Ideas Club . This animated film, based on the literary saga by Estíbaliz Burgaleta —screenwriter of series such as Velvet , Cable Girls , and Skam —proposes a cheeky and endearing comedy about childhood, chaos, and friendship. Burgaleta combines her work as a writer with teaching at the ECAM (University of El Salvador) and, with this project, delves into the field of animation for children.
With these five projects, VIVABOOK Lab begins a key stage in promoting audiovisual storytelling aimed at children in Spain . The first edition of the lab will be held between September 2025 and February 2026 in Barcelona, as part of the 18th edition of My First Film Festival. Selected proposals will receive a development grant and participate in an intensive training and mentoring program.
